“Once upon a time there was an enchanted colorful castle; it was surrounded by a lush park, with impressive sequoias, majestic oaks, maples and junipers…” it seems the beginning of a magic fairy tale, but this place isn’t figment of a vivid imagination. The Castle of Sammezzano lies in Leccio, Tuscany, only about 30 km from Florence. Walking around the castle is a pleasure of the senses. I forgot to be so close to the hustle and bustle of the city. The castle has ancient origins, but it has been completely reinvented by Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d’Aragona between 1843 and 1889. He was so fascinated by the East that he choose the morish style for the Castle. The bright colors and the multitude of geometries definitely give to the Castle a middle east look. I visited the Castle of Sammezzano in July 2016. Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to visit anymore. Basically, the castle is abandoned right now and it will be sold at auction. Here are some photos I took and I hope you like them!
Such a beautiful place! To bad it isn’t possible to visit anymore!

This was the first location I’d put on my list of places to visit in Italy before I moved here and then I learned you cannot visit any more. I’m so glad you managed! ❤
